  • Lyn Holland Leads Ladies Championships

Mansfield lady golfers were delighted to finally be heading out to contest their 2020 Championships this week, after a long delay due to the Covid pandemic, from the original scheduled date in May. The field of 31 ladies was the largest in recent years and it was especially pleasing to see many of our newer and higher handicap players also taking part, allowing 4 grades to be contested.

With the course looking absolutely perfect thanks to our wonderful greenkeeper team, it was Lyn Holland, playing off 23 who revelled in the conditions and brought in the winning score for the day with a fantastic 90 off the stick, and nett 67, grabbing the lead with both hands. Not far behind however was Millie Cumming (also playing off 23) with 92 (nett 69) to also make her mark on the champs. Others certainly in contention are Andrea Marsden and Sam Bailey both 95 and defending champion, Marg Knapp 96. Current grade leaders are A Grade: Andrea Marsden, B Grade: Lyn Holland, C Grade: Linda Brook and D Grade: Pam Abbott.

For the daily stroke comp, the winner of Div 1 was of course Lyn Holland and runner up Millie Cumming and for Div 2, the winner was Glenis Skinner with nett 71 on a countback to runner up Linda Brook. Leading line balls went to Louise Calvert-Jones and Marion Mitchell 74, Marg Knapp, Linda Terry, Lyn Poulson and Patsy Smiles all 76 and Sam Bailey 77. The putting was won by Millie Cumming with 25 putts, and the best score on the par 3’s and par 5’s was not surprisingly, Lyn Holland.

Premier League winners on Wednesday were The 2020’s, Bold and Smooth, The Wino’s, Three Decades and The Three Musketeers.

Earlier in the week on Tuesday, a very good field of 15 played a nine hole stableford round, won by Linda Brook with 19 and runner up Lyn Poulson 17 for Div 1 and Jackie Smithwick 16 from Pam Abbott 14, for Div 2.

On Saturday, in picture perfect conditions for round 2 of the men’s Champs, 15 ladies played a stableford round early in the day, with Marion Sargeant taking the win with a very nice 34 points on a countback to runner up Linda Terry. Line balls went to Pauline Ahola and Lesley Anderson also with 34, Millie Cumming 33, Jenny Koraus 32, Patsy Smiles and Robyn Baker both 31 and Sheryl Sargent and Marion Mitchell both 30.

Good luck to all the ladies as we play the second round of the Championships on Wednesday and to all the men who face up for their 3rd and final 4th round next weekend.
