  • Lady Golfers farewell one of their own

Our ladies are once again mourning the loss of one of our special past members, Joy Burns. Joy was a long time member of our club including Ladies Captain from 1990 to 1991. She was much loved by all, for her beautiful smile and positive outlook and was still playing 9 holes into her 89th year. A past pennant team member and often representing Mansfield around the traps, her photo appears in our locker-room gallery for several achievements over her golfing years. Joy passed away last week after a brief illness, not long after celebrating her 92 birthday. Her daughter Christine Fraser who is also one of our members, was by her side, along with her grandchildren. The lady golfers will be forming a guard of honour in tribute to her, at her funeral on Nov 1 and we all send our love and condolences to Christine and her family.

To happier news and we were delighted to be back to full time competitions last week and hit the ground running on Wednesday, playing our October Monthly Medal in glorious conditions. It was clear the girls couldn’t wait to be out there, with 35 players almost a record and some fabulous scores achieved. There were 2 in particular who would have felt hard done-by to not win the medal, but it was Linda Brook who took home the medal and the Div 1 prizemoney, with an outstanding nett 66. Sheryl Sargent was left wondering which putt might have made the difference, finding herself just one shot behind to take runner up on nett 67 while Sue Parsons was another one off the money with nett 68. For Div 2 it was great to see Marion Foster back in winning form with nett 71 and runner up Margie Franke-Williams with nett 72. Line balls went to the next 13 players down to nett 76. Nearest the pins went to Andrea Marsden on 7th, Susan Kinloch on 16th and Linda Brook had the 3rd shot on the 18th while Sheryl Sargent had a nice putting day to win that comp with 26 putts. Our thanks to Sanae’s Collections for their sponsorship for the Medal.

On Saturday 14 ladies played stableford with the best of them being Patsy Smiles to win with 33 points. Second was an in-form Marion Foster with 31 on countback to Sheryl Sargent.

This week sees us starting our Summer Pennant series with Jubilee, Bright and Myrtleford and we are also excited to once again be running ladies beginner clinics with 22 ladies registered to start in clinics on Fridays and Sundays for the next 5 weeks.
