  • Mansfield Ladies Bring Home the Div 2 Pennant Flag

It was great excitement for our Div 2 pennant team when they capped off their stellar pennant season by winning their final against Wodonga at Bright on Monday, 3 ½ to 1½.  With a team that included the wealth of experience of veteran pennant player Sue Parsons, the enthusiasm of first time finalist, Linda Brook (also taking on the role as team captain) and never-say-die players in Shirley Nolan, Shelly Comerford and Lyn Poulson, the prospects for this team were always looking great. With great wins to Brook (6/4), Parsons (5/4) and Nolan (4/3) already in the bank, Comerford and her opponent finished on the 17th with a square at that point and Poulson went through the motions of her last 2 holes, knowing the team was already over the line. Not surprisingly, the grins were ear-to-ear, as all the Mansfield girls assembled at the clubhouse at the end.

Sadly, it was not to be the same excitement for our other 2 divisions who had made it through to the finals. Div 1 had some very close matches, including Linda Terry going to the 19th, but ended up with a 4:1 loss to Thurgoona. In Div 4, our girls went down 3:2 to Commercial Albury, despite the valiant efforts of Lorraine Cullen, taking it to the 20th hole before succumbing to her opponent. It was a great effort by all our girls however and we were very proud to have such a dominant representation in the finals. Our team song and plenty of bubbles were still very much on hand for the trip home as we celebrated Div 2’s win. Great effort by all, and special thanks to our caddies who supported the players on the day.

Back home, there was no resting as our Ladies Championships were to commence just 2 days later. With a record field of 38 players, it was amazing to see the enthusiasm of our ladies, including 6 players on a handicap of 45 who were contesting D Grade. In picture perfect conditions, some great scores came in from many, though some others declared themselves to be still a bit weary from pennant!  Best on the day and leading the Championships was Andrea Marsden with 86 off the stick. Three others are very much in contention just 4 shots away with 90, being Sheryl Sargent, Donna Sedgman and from B Grade, Linda Brook. Linda therefore also leads B Grade while Shirley Nolan came in with a great gross score of 92 to lead C Grade and Wendy Hunt leads D Grade with 104. Playing off 26, Shirley Nolan was the winner of the Monthly Medal which was also contested, with nett 66. Great score Shirley!  Linda Brook could be rightly disappointed to miss out on the medal with nett 68. Thanks to our sponsor for this month’s medal, Edith and May.

The remaining results for Wednesday were Div 1 winner Linda Brook (68), runner up Marg Knapp (71). Div 2 winner Shirley Nolan (66) with Wendy Hunt (71) runner up. Line balls to Millie Cumming and Andrea Marsden both 72, Marion Mitchell, Louise Calvert-Jones, Jenny Koraus and Shelly Comerford all 73, Sheryl Sargent, Jenny Foster, Gayle Wells and Sue Wilson all 74, and Robyn Baker 75. Nearest the pins went to Shelly Comerford on the 3rd, Linda Brook on the 7th and Sam Bailey on the 16th.

On Saturday, Sue Parsons came in with a fabulous score of 40 points (despite wiping the last it seems!) for the stableford round, to take the win over Marion Mitchell with 36 points. Special mention must be made, of new golfer Robyn Bridgewater for her lovely score of 35 points!

Good luck to all for round 2 of the Champs this week.
