  • Mansfield Bowl a Great Success

After missing out in 2020, the Mansfield Ladies were very excited to be able to hold their annual “Bowl” last Friday. Welcoming 92 players from the NE and Dalhousie Districts, as well as some large contingents from the Melbourne area, it was a very happy field who headed out in almost perfect golfing conditions. While many of our visitors were rueing the speed of our greens, the ladies from Wodonga clearly had a handle on it and were the ultimate winners of the team event with a combined stableford total of 99 points. Next best was the team from Tocumwal with 97 points. For the individual grade competition, A Grade was won by Judy Langford of Wodonga with 36 points, B Grade by our own Lyn Poulson with 36 points, C Grade Lorraine Cullen, playing for Riverview, but also one of our own, with 38 points and D grade another of our own Lorraine Wilson with a fabulous top score for the day of 39 points. So the home ground did indeed have an advantage!

    Millie Cumming

Club stalwart, Millie Cumming spent the day raking bunkers for the ladies at the 3rd

The golf was followed by an amazing lunch and presentations in The Ranges. The main course by chef Marcus received high praise by all and the ladies put on a dessert smorgasbord to die for. Huge thanks must go to the team effort by all our ladies who helped in so many capacities – not only making desserts, but with manning the various tables including a loaded trading table, donating goods for raffle hampers, helping with scoring, setting up, serving etc. Special mention must go to Millie for her biscuits which she has been making for this event since 1999 and for her dedication  to the cause, raking the 3rd bunker for our guests all day.

The other great excitement for our golfing ladies this week is for all 3 Divisions to be playing in their pennant finals at Bright on Monday. We wish all players the very best of luck and hope to be reporting some exciting results in next week’s issue.

Meanwhile at home, Tuesday’s 9 hole Par round was contested by 9 players and the winner with -2 was Anne Tilbrook on a countback to Dulcie Donaghy and Wendy Hunt. Congratulations to Dulcie for this great score as her first foray into the winner’s circle, given she is a relative newcomer to golf!

Wednesday was the Doris Chambers Foursomes, contested by a fabulous field of 15 pairs. A Golf Victoria event, the winners of this prestigious event get to play in one of two State Finals held at Southern and Sanctuary Lakes and the outcome of our event was particularly exciting. Winners with a lovely score of 41, both playing off a handicap of 43, were Lorraine Wilson and Pam Abbott. The delight on these ladies faces when they fully understood what they had won was priceless! Well done girls – we are very proud of you!  Runners up were Kylie Egan / Sue Crow.

Thursday’s 9 hole stableford was won by Wendy Hunt with 16 points and Saturday saw some handicaps falling (perhaps untimely given our pending pennant matches!) by some players. Winner with a lovely nett 70 was Sue Crow. Runner up was Sheryl Sargent with 73 on a countback to Sam Bailey. Other line balls went to Linda Brook and Gayle Wells both 74, Sue Parsons 75 and Kylie Egan 77. Both nearest the pins on 3rd and 16th went to Gayle Wells, Kylie Egan and Sue Parsons shared the win for the best score on every 3rd hole and Sheryl Sargent won the putting.

Finally, this week coming sees the start of our Ladies Championships, so good luck to all players.
