Club Professional Dan Robertson explaining the finer points to one of our beginner groups

This week saw our program of Ladies Beginner Clinics kick off for the summer and they have proven to be hugely popular. With 30 ladies signing up for the 5 week program and more on the waiting list, it seems that word has spread about how much fun golf can be!  The Get Into Golf program is run under the auspices of Golf Australia and is all about encouraging women to take up the sport but also to promote the social and fun aspects of the game. Certainly the laughs and smiles from each group at the end of their first clinics supported this idea! With 3 clinics of 10 ladies each week, Club Professional Dan Robertson will be kept very busy over the 5 weeks. Many of the lady members, along with Captain Linda Terry, are also attending the clinics to assist and encourage and we all look forward to seeing many of the ladies progressing out from the practice range onto the course in coming weeks.

As for our regular comps, our week kicked off on Tuesday with a huge field of 20 contesting the 9 hole stableford round. Winner of div 1 was Linda Terry with 20 points, and runner up Robyn Baker on 19. For Div 2 Lorraine Cullen had a fantastic 22 points to take the win over Anne Watkins with 17. Line balls went to Christie Fraser 19, Kay Hewitt 18, Glenis Skinner 17 and Marion Mitchell 17.

    Jenny Koraus Putting

On Wednesday 23 ladies played a round of their Summer Cup and the winner of Div 1 with a terrific 41 points was Donna Sedgman. That handicap is really starting to tumble Donna! Runner up was Lyn Poulson with 35.  In Div 2, the winner was the very steady Jenny Koraus with 36 points and runner up was the equally in-form, Lorraine Cullen with 35. Line balls went to Robyn Baker 34, Andrea Marsden 33, Meg Broomfield 33, Shirley Nolan and Millie Cumming 32 and Sam Bailey 31. Donna Sedgman had the nearest the pin on the 3rd and Gayle Wells on the 16th. The Hidden Holes went to Lyn Poulson.

Thursday’s George Walker round was won by Barbara Crawford with 16 points. On Saturday, the win went to Linda Brook with 37 on a countback to Millie Cumming (runner up) and also Marion Mitchell. Line balls went down to 32 and the nearest the pin on the 3rd was Sheryl Sargent and the 16th Linda Brook.

On a final sad note, the lady golfers were proud to form a guard of honour for their friend and golfing buddy of many years, Joan Christopher, who passed away on 31st Dec. Joan was an active member of our club for many years, representing the club across all levels including pennant and events around the North East and was invariably the life of the party for those who travelled with her to these events. She will be sorely missed by many and our deepest condolences to her family.
