Mansfield hosted the 2nd round of the NEDGA Division 2 Scratch Pennant on Sunday in magnificent autumn conditions with firm and fast greens. Although Mansfield had a bye the four teams that played were lavish in their praise of the course condition, catering, organisation and hospitality provided by Mansfield Golf Club.

The final of the J.Nolan 4-Ball Match Play trophy was fought out on Sunday afternoon with Tony Cooksey and Kane Blunt taking on Clive Clarke and Andrew Murray. Congratulations go to the Cooksey and Blunt combination winning this prestigious Board event 4 and 3 and well played to Clarke and Murray.

The final contestants in the J.D.Neely Singles Match Play trophy have now been decided. Bill Moran got over Clive Marsden in a hard fought battle to win 1 up and secure a place in the final. His opponent will be Dave Smithwick managing to hold out Phil Conway 3 and 1. Best of luck goes to the finalists and well done to Conway and Marsden for getting so far through the tournament.

The stand-out score for the Saturday Par competition went to Peter Dolling (19) taking out Division 2 with an outstanding 6 up. Runner up was Sam Sandhu (22) just missing out with 5 up. Division 1 was taken out by Alex Stephens (16) with 5 up on a count-back from Dave Smithwick (14) also on 5 up. It is easy to see why Smithwick is in the match play final with that form.

The usual Stableford competition was staged on Thursday with Gary Johnson (16) shooting the lights out for 43 points and almost holing out on the par three 16th, tapping in a six inch putt for birdie. Runner up was Rob Fankhauser (11) on 40 points. Division 2 was won by Graham Smith (34) with 43 points from Peter Dolling (19) on 39 points. The spectre of Bryan “Goldfinger” Curtis (25) looms large again and he is well and truly back winning the Gold Course on both Thursday and Tuesday with scores of 44 and 43 points respectively.

Tuesday was also a Stableford competition and first place was won by John Newby (17) with 41 points and Phil Conway (10) taking second..

Pro-Pin winners for the week were Phil Conway, David HaslamTrevor Wright all picking up the “cash”. All the nearest the pin prizes were spread around with no multiple winners for the week.

Mansfield plays Yarrawonga Mulwala in the Scratch Pennant next Sunday at Rutherglen. Our team is not that proficient on sand greens however our good win last year proves that anything is possible.

The new Mansfield Golf Club web site will be available this week giving it a new look and feel and freshness. As with most technical system upgrades the fingers are crossed that no major issues eventuate – just ask Westpac and Telstra!

A reminder to all that the “Masters Monday” event is on next Monday so sign up now for a great morning of entertainment and golf.
